Client Introduction

End Client — South Northumberland Cricket Club, South Northumberland Bulls.

This is the flagship location for cricket in the north. A top 5 lane training facility for national level cricket.

Project Background Brief

The current lighting at the facility was not providing sufficient lux levels. There was a concern that this was posing increased risks for players involved in the fast ball sport. An ultra-low glare solution was needed to raise the lux level but not impact visibility for the players. The minimum average lighting level required was 1800lux. Savings in running costs were also a factor in driving the project.

Luminaire Solution:

We received an initial inquiry from Power Plus Group about our LWH fitting as an attractive option that would also meet the ultra-low glare requirement. Unlike more industrial style fittings, the body and varied range of optics and outputs gave a visually appealing aesthetic as well as the flexibility to provide a bespoke solution.

Our Lighting Design team produced a scheme using the LWH and adapted the optics to deliver a UGR 14 rating. The 59W LWH fitting was chosen as an efficient output to deliver just over 10000 lumens each. This proposal was an ideal solution to create a safe environment with optimal visibility to support players at a national level.

Ultra low glare was achieved throughout with minimal scalloping on walls and minimal shadowing, even once all cricket nets all pulled out. Since installation, a number of compliments have been made over the lack of glare, including from a former British badminton professional who stated: “I hope this lighting can be considered for national level badminton courts going forward. This reduced glare is a game changer when it comes to looking up to return a shuttlecock.”
