Client Introduction

Direct Client A key Wirefield client specialising in helping business’ to make Carbon, Electricity and Financial savings with short returns on investment.

End Client A large London academy school who are dedicated to inspiring and supporting every child to be the best they can be.

Project Background Brief

The school’s lighting and emergency system had been in situ for many years, presenting a multitude of motivations to upgrade.

Existing fluorescent lighting was designed with glare reduction in mind, but without taking in to consideration optimum light levels for the space. This has made learning spaces dim, gloomy and uncomfortable to work in caused by dark spots and poor uniformity.

Challenge

The emergency lighting system posed a monthly and yearly drawn out task for on site maintenance teams; duration and functionality tests are required on all emergency luminaires to adhere to health and safety legislation. This is of course a top priority for such a site, but the existing manual process made accurate record keeping difficult to maintain, with the task driving up costs due to how time consuming the process is.

Running costs of the existing lighting were also a major factor driving the project. Existing fittings included 4x14W T5 panels, 2x35W T5 & 2x49W T5 linear luminaires which were causing high energy consumption, increasing overheads and depleting the school’s precious budget.

Luminaire Solution

Wirefield have delivered several successful projects with the client over the years and so were excited to be invited to quote for the latest opportunity. We were presented with a requirement to supply a continuous, suspended, linear system with low UGR to upgrade an existing fluorescent system.

We produced a lighting design using the PROLED100 HCC UGR, the perfect fit supplied in both 4ft and 5ft variants with microprismatic diffusers providing low glare control – imperative for classroom applications. 745x start, middle and end pieces were through wired for ease of on site installation. Finished off with connecting joins and bespoke blank infill lengths to suit differing spaces, a customised solution was personalised to each classroom.

Emergency Control Solution

emergency lighting for specific faults and energy usage, generating automatic reports allowing for fast, proactive maintenance and reduced luminaire downtime.

Self-test emergency modules are used, complying to British Standards which do not require additional manual key switches. The Eye-Wi emergency monitoring system was then established in the HCC luminaires, in addition to an installation of 300+ recessed energy efficient LED panels, exit signage, non-maintained spotlights and twinspots.

To remedy the issues posed by the existing emergency lighting, Wirefield’s Eye-Wi wireless emergency monitoring system was proposed. Superior technology is installed via the simplest install. Luminaires only require a Live, Neutral and Earth; no separate switched live, no Lighting Control Modules, network controllers or head-end PCs. Internet connectivity is not required nor used for lighting controls, but the system is linked to the internet by adding a Collator which constantly monitors the

“With today’s significant energy price increases, similar scale projects are predicting pay back times of as little as 7 months.”

Results

The new system has been able to deliver an overall enhanced quality of light. Light levels are met for optimum comfort, bright spots eliminated, uniformity is provided across the space and colour rendering is improved. Well lit spaces are proven to improve performance and concentration, so end users are well supported to be the best they can be.

On site maintenance are able to target exact faults on specific luminaires by locating unique Eye-Wi codes on commissioned site drawings loaded on the customer portal, accessed via a Samsung tablet.

Monthly and yearly reports are automatically generated and can be sent to multiple relevant contacts, or downloaded as and when required. Huge time savings have been made by automating these processes, with minimal downtime on luminaires ensuring the system is working as it should, protecting the end client in emergency situations.

Overall project savings measured across carbon, energy and financial have been reported at 70% a huge impact on the client’s energy bills and carbon footprint.
